Vision

Core Vision:

The Cairns region will be a place that has retained its character and the unique tropical lifestyle so attractive to the people who live here and those who visit.  We will have a sense of spirit and community and will be proud of our people, our achievements and our identity.  This will be achieved by balancing social well-being and environmental quality with economic development.

1. Businesses and industries are sustainable and create a robust economy:

The region will grow by being smart, finding opportunities and forming partnerships where businesses, industries and government work together in innovative ways.  Small and large businesses will be encouraged and supported and our resources used wisely.  We will keep locals in work and in business by promoting the purchase of local goods and servic

2. Planned infrastructure and services meet community needs:

Cairns will be a prominent tropical city, admired for its distinctive architecture, shady green spaces and healthy environment.  Effective planning will ensure that development is sustainable, responsive to community needs and enhances the character of neighbourhoods, suburbs and towns including the new Douglas Shire towns.  Infrastructure, including transport, water and waste, will be efficiently managed to provide reliable, affordable services for all residents.

3. Local government works constructively with the whole community

The Council will interact with the community in a variety of ways, using focus groups, forums and real dialogue.  It will listen, encourage and value people’s views and work towards solutions, which meet the needs of the community.  Decisions will be made in an open and transparent way that balances different views.  The Council will also represent the interests of the Cairns region at a state and national level level.

4. The community is clever, active and creative:

A diverse range of arts, crafts, music, sports, education, celebrations and festivals will enrich our community.  Resources and grants that are distributed equitably will nourish these social and cultural activities.  There will be a variety of facilities, including sports grounds, recreation reserves, galleries, libraries, art spaces, museums and theatres, that have been supported and developed to meet the needs and interests of the community.

5. Our natural environment is valued, restored and protected:

The people of the Cairns region will have a strong sense of ownership of our natural environment: the rainforest, inlet, creeks, hill slopes, reef, wetlands, streetscapes and parks that are our backyard.  These important assets will be revitalised and managed to maintain their natural values, enhance quality of life of residents and ensure on-going appeal to visitors.

6. Diverse groups and communities flourish together:

We will value difference and create vibrant, inclusive communities that are distinctive whilst sharing a common vision.  We will respect our indigenous peoples and their cultures and acknowledge our history and heritage.  All residents will feel safe and supported.
